DATTL Video 4. Deep Grammar

The 4 skills of cognitive theory—oral reception (listening), oral production (speaking), written reception (reading), written production (writing)—don’t correspond to the genuine way of living the new language in the classroom. Most language teachers prefer a more practical categorizing of their action. They use oral interpersonal exchange giving meaning to listening and speaking, reading, writing, and develop ‘basics’: such language techniques as vocab, verbs, grammar, and spelling, call it focus on language. The 5Cs standards have brought a beneficial renewal. Nonetheless teachers are still doing grammar with guilt. In the deep approach, the writing process is the primary focus of language learning and teaching. Oral exchange must be considered the by-product of writing, viewing and reading in the language classroom.
